Effective medicines continue to promote health through improvements in health-related quality of life, and survival. However, the full potential of many treatments is not attained, as sub-optimal adherence to (or compliance with) medicines reduce their effectiveness. As many as 50% of patients are reported not take their medicines as prescribed. The direct consequences of which include therapeutic non-response, disease progression and an economic burden on patients, their carers and society.
There is increasing evidence to suggest that methods are available to improve adherence. A new European research initiative – the ABC project (ascertaining barriers for compliance) is an international collaboration of experts in adherence research with the specific aims of identifying methods for promoting adherence, assessing their clinical and cost-effectiveness, and to disseminate recommendations to the wider community.
